Small-scale fish farmers in developing countries have long sought affordable and sustainable fish feed formulations. In a new study, researchers have developed a low-cost, locally available feed made from crop residues and aquatic plants that can be used to produce healthy and productive fish. The feed, which is based on rice bran, cassava leaves, and water hyacinth, was found to provide similar performance to a commercial feed in terms of weight gain, body composition, and feed conversion ratio. The study also found that the local feed was more palatable to fish than the commercial diet. The authors say the findings demonstrate the feasibility of using locally sourced ingredients to produce an affordable and sustainable fish feed for small-scale farmers in developing countries. They suggest that further research is needed to optimize the recipe for different species of fish.
